THE DAIRY

Westhampton, Massachusetts

We were tasked with overhauling these gardens to satisfy the clients’ opposing aesthetic visions. One adored the messy, wild look of an unkempt meadow; the other wanted the sense of order and tidiness of a town garden.

To achieve that desired neatness, we created sharp edges around each bed and relocated aggressively spreading perennials to a more appropriate home— the property’s cow pastures. Structural shrubs and grasses were placed throughout the gardens to give more delicate perennials physical and aesthetic support. An exuberant color palette and heaps of texture keep everything from feeling too crisp. The result is a series of gardens that feel cultivated, yet still appropriate to their cheerful, bucolic setting.
