FOREST’S EDGE
Whately, Massachusetts
This garden was designed to be a barrier between the surrounding woodland and backyard, where our clients frequently entertain. It needed to gently blend into its wild, forested backdrop whilst looking obviously cultivated from the house. The solution was to weave native ferns between the more dramatic plants. They softened the appearance of the garden as a whole, allowing graphic purple foliage and yellow grasses to shine. This is a garden that changes considerably with the seasons. In spring, it is predominantly blue and white. As summer progresses, it boasts a distinct palette of purple, yellow, black, and cream, then later fades into soft yellows and reds for autumn.
Natural stone outcroppings punctuate the garden and add a sense of structure to the carefree planting choices.
